We launched this ‘temporary’ website in 2016 with the intention of replacing it. We’ve grown to like it because it doesn’t feel like other websites. It turns out other people like that as well, so here we are.

XXIX1 is a small team2 that helps people make the things they’ve always wanted to make. Some might call it a design studio, creative agency, branding firm, etc. but those labels don’t seem to fit. As with many people starting out on their own, we wanted to do things a little differently than what we’d seen at other places.

Working across different media, disciplines, and industries,2 our favorite projects let us collaborate with our partners from concept to launch3 (and beyond). Our goal is to do work that answers its brief while also being authentic, concept-driven, and unique, combining contemporary graphic design and modern technology. We know launching is hard so we work with people to actually bring their ideas to life.

Our self-initiated projects4 engage people and the world beyond design itself but through the designer’s lens. These projects are labors of love but remind us why we’re passionate about what we do.

In 2015, we opened a mixed-use space in New York’s East Village5 that we called XXXI.6 We wanted a space that interacts with the city and again gives artists’ studios prominence in the neighborhood. It’s home to XXIX, as well as shared studio space for a group of friends and resident designers,7 an exhibition space for designers, and graphic design store.8 We also eat lunch together on Fridays.9 In 2018 we opened a studio in Berlin,10 where part of our team is based.

Send a mail if you’d like to visit or start a new project, or subscribe to receive infrequent emails.

  4. Today it’s difficult to seperate strategy, brand, product/experience, content, and technology. Fortunately, we’re a team of curious people with diverse skills so we prefer thinking about projects holistically. When deeper expertise is called for, we collaborate with smart friends.

We design for print, packaging, screens, spaces, and objects. And anything we haven’t designed yet we’re eager to learn.
